Why Globular Cluster CMQ3?

  • [Turn Your Quest 3 to Quest Pro ] The CMQ3 comfort mod enables you to turn your Quest 3 to the Quest Pro Open-face mode, which is one of the most liked features of Quest Pro. No pressure on the cheek, no fog, much cooler, and glasses-friendly. Under Open-face mode, your eyes can be as close as possible to the lens, which means, you get max possible FOV. It takes some time for the brain to get used to  the open-face mode and ingore the light leak(still immersive in actual gaming). The more you use it, the more you will like it.
  • [Comfortable First] Designed and refined under the Comfort-first idea. As a VR gamer since 2015, it's comfort and content not battery life (there are many diferent battery solutions ) that prevent long sessions or spending more time in VR.  Weight is distributed as evenly as possible around the head with grippy material and enough support. Stable on the head at smaller forehead pressure compared to halo straps from other brands. The less pressure, the more comfortable.
  • [Lying down possible] watching videos/movies online never be so relaxing, other brands with rear battery makes lying down not possible which is really a big lose for you to take full advantage of your Quest 3
  • [Self-weighted Grippy Rear Pad] Achieves front-rear weight balance on its own without a battery as the weight counter, Enables you the option of large capacity & fast charging normal power bank(like 20000mAh, 22W) in the pocket to extend really unlimited sessions
  • [One Stop Solution] Package includes 3 different forehead pads (two are sweat-absorbing and washable, and one is sweatproof, fit different seasons/scenario/user preference). Besides, there are also 3 different material rear pads + 2 different top straps, a combination at your own choice to fit best for your comfort.
  • [Modular Design} Battery/headphone/facial interface module can be purchased and installed separately

Story Timeline

1# Dec 2022,  received the Quest Pro and enjoyed a lot the open-face mode(play without any facial interface), at first, it felt a bit weird compared to the Quest 2, but once got used to and actually engaged in the gaming, it's still immersive. No fog, glasses friendly, much cooler, no pressure on the cheek, never wanted to go back to anything pressing on the face. (There was a problem though for the stock Quest Pro, the forehead pad was small, and the pressure on the forehead was way bigger than wanted, we fixed this by designing a comfort mod that made the forehead pad softer & wider, and rear pad bigger & more grip and adding a padded top strap to distribute some weight from forehead to top of the head.)The Quest Pro then became the most comfortable VR headset we ever played for long sessions (VIVE, VIVE PRO, VIVE XR ELITE, VALVE INDEX, Quest 1&2, Rift S, PS VR1 & VR2, Pico 3 & 4, and HP Reverb). This inspired us to think about designing an open-face comfort head strap for Quest 2 and the upcoming Quest 3 that is built with headphones and hot-swap batteries

2# Feb - April 2023, Designing, 3D printing, and testing different prototypes/versions

3# May 2023, selected the best one from 3 different prototypes, perfecting it and fixing engineering problems

4# May - June 2023, searching for the right materials for pads. We found that most head straps on the market chose PU material for the forehead and rear pads which are soft and easy to clean but slipping(no enough grip), not good for heat disphere, and not sweat-absorbing(Sweating is a common complaint for VR users.). For the open-face mode, if the pads are slipping, the tighten pressure needed to keep the headset stable will be big which is bad for comfort. After trying more than 10 different materials, we selected fabric, PU, breathable mesh, cooling gel, and anti-slip silicon. During this period we were making our comfort mod for PSVR 2 (CMP2), and added those material pads to that kit and customers liked it a lot.

5# Oct 2023, designing and molding the adapters for Quest 3, as Quest 3 added a built-in AMP, the audio was much better than Quest 2 so we decided not to add the clip-on headphones to the head strap.

6# End of Nov 2023, finished CMQ3 (comfort mod for Quest 3) and producing the first batch

Challenges

1) There are so many things affecting comfort. The user's head size/shape, whether wearing glasses, long/short haired/bald are all the factors we need to consider, and this makes us abandon many prototypes/update many versions. It took much longer than expected to develop and perfect.

2) Without the solid facial interface support on the cheek, the biggest challenge for the open-face mode is keeping the sweet spot and whole headset stable on the head(not wobbly) and at the same time decreasing the pressure on the forehead/top of head/rear head to the smallest possible level. We achieved this by distributing the weight evenly on the head, using a padded wider top strap to provide support on top of the head,  applying grippy/anti-slip material and design, adding weight to the rear pads to make it self-weighted and whole headset front-rear weight-balanced
